Max Steiner (1888 - 1971) was an Academy Award-winning Austrian-American composer of music for theatre and films. He has received numerous Oscar nominations and his name is now attached to the annual "Max Steiner Award".
Following the outbreak of War in Europe Steiner moved to New York where he worked with George Gershwin, Jerome Kern and Sigmund Romberg before moving to Hollywood to concentrate on film, noteably 'Casablanca', 'King Kong' and 'Gone with the Wind'. He has received numerous Oscar nominations and his name is now attached to the annual "Max Steiner Award"; for film music which recognises Steiner's pioneering role in the early development of the craft.
